Building Permits

Reminder from our Building Inspector, Gary Hora
204-380-9624 or supervisor@psweedbuilding.ca

Doing any building projects this summer? Just a reminder that any building erected or placed on your property that measures over 108 sq. ft. needs to have a building permit issued. Building Permit Applications can be found on our website and need to be accompanied with the appropriate building fees, a building plan, and site plan of your property.

If you are building an open deck and it is over two (2) feet high, a permit is required. Decks under two (2) feet high and fences under four (4) feet high do not require a permit.

All pools, 24 inches or more in depth, require a fence and a lockable gate. You will also want to contact your insurance provider for insurance liability. If you have any questions pertaining to building, please give our Building Inspector.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, all Public Meetings/Hearings will continue to be accessible via computer, tablet, smartphone or by using your phone, through GoToMeeting invites.

If you wish to attend an upcoming meeting please contact the RM Office and specify which meeting(s) you would like to attend. *An email address or phone number will be required to receive the invitation.*

RM Recycling Changes
As of the end of the year, December 31st, 2020, Eastman Recycling has made the decision to no longer provide recycling pickup services to the RM of Piney. The RM is unaware what direction we will take at this time but want to make everyone aware of the changes that may be taking place in regards to our recycling process. Municipal Emergency Coordinator

COVID-19
Manitoba is now in Phase III of their re-opening plan. Please find the Phase III plan for download:
http://www.manitoba.ca/covid19/restoring/index.html

As of June 25th, 2020, Public health officials advise that the total number of lab-confirmed positive and probable positive cases in Manitoba is 316. The data also shows that no individuals in hospital or intensive care. There are 15 active cases and 294 individuals who have recovered from COVID-19, the number of deaths due to COVID-19 remains at 7.

Canada Day is upon us and Manitobans are reminded to practice social distancing and follow all public health guidelines for gatherings whether at home, the cottage, or camping.  Stay home if you feel sick, practice good hand hygiene and cover your cough. If travelling, be COVID-CAREFUL and reduce stops while travelling.

State of Local Emergency
The State of Local Emergency has been extended until July 8th, 2020. The level of ground saturation is such, that even a smaller rainfall event could negatively impact our roads and potentially properties of our rate payers.

Our Community Grocery Vendors
I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the owners and staff of our local convenience stores in Sprague, South Junction, and Woodridge for their excellent work in keeping us all supplied during the COVID-19 crisis. We know they have gone “above and beyond” to ensure that we have the necessary supplies we need. Next time you are in one of these stores take the time to thank the owners and/or staff for their exceptional work in our community. Without them we would not have fared nearly so well during this time.

The Recent Flooding of June, 2020
All of the staff here at the RM Office have been working hard to get things back to normal after the flooding produced by heavy rains early this June. Public Works Staff have been working tirelessly to restore roads and access for emergency services for our rate payers. Acknowledgement also goes to our private contractors who have been tirelessly supplying material and equipment under the careful direction of our Public Works Staff. No evacuations were made in the RM of Piney.

Wildfires
Now that flooding is at a minimal, we must turn our attention back to the possibility of wildfires. It is up to all of us to prevent wildfires. Please be aware when working in the yard or out in the back country. Reminder: use 911 (not the 1-800 number) to report any fires in the RM of Piney. Our firefighters will be notified immediately and will be able to respond rapidly.

Economic Development

Surveys are an effective way for Sunrise Corner to learn what is important to residents. The information helps us set priorities and shapes how we support local businesses and community groups. Your participation is extremely important, so thanks in advance for taking the time to help us help you.

Business Recovery Survey
Data is important to how we market Sunrise Corner. The Business Recovery Survey is being undertaken by Sunrise Corner to assess how COVID-19 has affected all businesses in our region. It is certainly one of the benefits of the rural lifestyle that we have been impacted by COVID-19 to a lesser degree than larger centres. If the majority of our businesses have seen little to no impact (or even an increase in business) it’s definitely worth promoting.

Access the survey from our Sunrise Corner Economic Development Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/SunriseCornerEconomicDevelopment/. Answers are 100% anonymous unless you choose to provide your contact information.

Community Support Survey
COVID-19 has negatively impacted every community group in our region. If your committee is looking for alternate ways to raise funds or hold events but aren’t sure how the Phase 3 rules of Manitoba’s Restoring Safe Services apply, please complete the survey and we’ll work together to figure out a plan.

We are also using this survey to create a database of all community groups and events in Sunrise Corner as a roadmap for our marketing efforts. Even if large events and festivals are unable to go ahead this year, we will be promoting past events through social media to help with future recovery.

Access the survey link from our Sunrise Corner Economic Development Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/SunriseCornerEconomicDevelopment/.

Economic Development Input
The Piney Stuartburn Economic Development Board is initiating a strategic planning process to determine priorities for Sunrise Corner Economic Development. There will be several ways for the residents of the RMs of Piney and Stuartburn to participate so watch the Sunrise Corner Economic Development Facebook page for details to be released shortly.

Sprague RCMP

Sprague RCMP has returned to normal office hours which are between 9am and 5pm, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday one week, followed by Wednesday, and Thursday the following week on a rotating basis. We are continuing to ask you to NOT attend the Sprague RCMP Detachment, unless your matter is urgent. For all non-urgent matters, including the requesting of Criminal Record Checks, please call (204) 437-2041 and leave a message, your call will be returned. Should you require immediate Police assistance you can call (204) 437-2222 or 911.
While the International Border remains closed to non-essential travel, the Province of Manitoba has eased restrictions on Provincial Travel to Western Canada, and North Eastern Ontario, without the need to quarantine for 14 days upon your return. This means increased traffic on our roadways, as people look to get out and enjoy all that our corner of the Province has to offer. Please keep your speed down, your seat belts buckled, and always have a designated driver if you plan on enjoying the odd alcoholic beverage! Be safe, maintain social distancing practices, but enjoy the start of summer!
